Lecture Series: Images/Imaging
Lecture: Visual Machineries: Scientific Images and Visual Cultures in the Spanish Context by Prof. Nuria Valverde (Nuria Valverde, History Institute, Centre for Human and Social Sciences, CSIC, Spain).

This talk focuses on three Spanish episodes of the history of science from late 17th, 18th and 19th centuries, respectively. Each of them deals from a different perspective with the discussion of how scientific images should be produced, displayed and read. Its aim is to shed new light on how the processes through which we consolidate and use visual languages reflect social and cultural strategies.

Nuria Valverde (Ph D., Science and Culture) is a researcher in the Instituto de Historia, CSIC. She has recently published Actos de precisión. Instrumentos científicos, economía moral y opinión pública en la Ilustración Española (2007), about the construction of scientific networks and knowledge in 18th century Spain and the public understanding of them. Right now, she is working in a book about the evolution of scientific images and observational practices in Spain; and she is also doing research about the impact of neurological images in the construction of social and cultural identities. Other works: co-author with A. Lafuente of Los mundos de la Ilustración Española (2003); main documentalist for two exhibitions: Madrid, Ciencia y Corte (1999), and Monstruos y seres imaginarios en la Biblioteca Nacional (2000).

Images/Imaging will be devoted to exploring the creation, role, and meaning of images, across the history of science, film, and newsreels. Following lecture: "NO-DO: entre propaganda, mentalidad y liturgia" by film historian Vicente Sánchez Biosca (University of Valencia, Visiting Professor, Princeton University) on Monday April, 7 at 6:15 p.m.

Co-sponsored by NYU Department of Spanish & Portuguese.

Reception to follow.

Jose R. develops a routine as a cab driver on the streets of Barcelona. His life would be the same as any other 52-year-old cab driver, if it weren’t for the fact that the taxis he drives are stolen. Jose steals to be able to work. How can such an absurd situation develop? Is he simply crazy or a worker out of a job who has been doomed by the system and forced into this situation?
