Lecture Series: Images/Imaging Lecture by Prof. Clara Rodríguez (Fordham University) on the
role of Latino stars in Hollywood throughout time. Her book: Heroes, Lovers, and Others – The
Story of Latinos in Hollywood (OUP. January 2008) will be on sale after the
talk. Images/Imaging will be devoted to exploring the
creation, role, and meaning of images, across the history of science, film,
and newsreels. Heroes, Lovers, and Others tells the fascinating history of Latino actors in American film
from the silent era to today. Rodriguez examines such Latino legends as
Desi Arnaz, Dolores del Rio, Rita Hayworth, Raquel Welch, Anthony Quinn,
Selma Hayek, and Antonio Banderas More than just a collection of celebrity
stories, the book explores the attitudes, cultural conditions, and
assumptions that influenced the portrayal of Latinos in film as well as
their reception by the public. Heroes, Lovers, and Others is a
comprehensive volume packed with carefully researched information and
analysis for both students and cinema enthusiasts alike. Clara Rodriguez Professor of Sociology, Fordham University. Currently at work
on an update of the classic Coser, Kadushin and Powell text, Books: The Culture and Commerce of Publishing
, which will be published by Stanford University Press. She has also been a
consultant to a number of television shows and documentaries, most
recently, "Dora, the Explorer" and "Sesame Street." Reception to

Documenta Spain 2008, curated by Marta Sánchez CAN TUNIS, directed by José
González Morandi, Paco Toledo, 86 min., Spain, 2006. In Spanish with
English subtitles. The film will be introduced by María del Mar Gómez and
Patricia López, NYU Department of Spanish and Portuguese. Juan and his eight brothers and sisters and dozens
of cousins live in Can Tunis. He fills his days with singing, dancing,
mischief and worse. His mother is in jail and his father tries to take care
of the family as well as he can. Can Tunis is a seedy suburb of Barcelona.
Since the 1980s, it's the place where drug addicts come to get their fix. Can
Tunis is a sincere and poignant portrait of a neighbourhood in utter
disorder. How will these people ever be able to hold out in a better area
of Barcelona?

curated by Encarnación Gutierrez-Rodríguez Film:La memoria interior (Dir.: Maria Ruido, 33 min.), followed by a
Q&A with the filmmaker Maria Ruido and
Encarnación Gutierrez-Rodríguez (Visiting
Professor, Five Colleges Women's Studies Research Centre, Smith College). With
English subtitles. Maria Ruido takes the history of emigration of her
parents from Spain to Germany to reflect upon the mechanism of forgetting

Anna Aguilar-Amat
(Barcelona, 1962) is a professor of Terminology at the Universitat Autònoma
de Barcelona. She is the author of Trànsit entre dos vols (2001), Música i
escorbut (2002, translated into English as Music and Scurvy), and Jocs de
l¹oca (2006), among other books. She has been awarded some of the most
prestigious literary prizes in Catalan, such as Carles Riba and the Jocs
Florals de Barcelona. Since 2003, Aguilar-Amat is president of QUARKpoesia
with the aim to promote poetry translation of less translated languages.
Arnau Pons (Felanitx, Mallorca, 1965) is
the author of poetry books such as A desclòs, and Desertar, self-published
by Negranit. He has translated the work of Paul Celan, Mário de
Sá-Carneiro, Herberto Helder, Dino Campana, and Ingeborg Bachmann,
among others. As a literary critic it is worth mentioning his work with
Jean Bollack (Piedra de corazón, 2002, and Poesía contra poesía, 2005) on
Paul Celan. Pons has developed and independent and yet very important task
as a publisher and editor of literary criticism and poetry in translation.
