Patricio Guzmán, one of the foremost figures of the New Latin American Cinema, has spent over 30 years constructing a history of his country unparalleled in scope, commitment, and cinematic dynamism, beginning most famously with the astounding, three-part The Battle of Chile, a document of the final nine months of the Allende government, and the coup that toppled it on September 11th, 1973. In conjunction with the current film series of four of his epic documentaries at Anthology Film Archives including the New York theatrical premiere of his most recent film Salvador Allende (for more info and complete schedule visit http://www.anthologyfilmarchives.org/), we are pleased to present a panel discussion of Guzmán and his work by scholars and critics Amalia Córdova, Jonathan Kahana and Jerónimo Rodríguez Naranjo.

Amalia Córdova is from Santiago, Chile, where she studied Fine Arts and Aesthetics at the Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile. She received an MA in Performance Studies at New York University in 2007. Since 2002 she has coordinated the Latin American Program of the Film and Video Center of the Smithsonian’s National Museum of the American Indian in New York City, organizing video tours, film festivals and international screenings. She has been a panelist, moderator, selector, and juror at several international indigenous film festivals and has written on the history and development of indigenous media in Latin America.

Jonathan Kahana (Ph.D., Rutgers) is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Cinema Studies at New York University and the author of Intelligence Work: Documentary and the American Political Imaginary (Columbia University Press, 2008) and chapters in The Dreams of Interpretation: A Century Down the Royal Road (University of Minnesota Press, 2007), and Contemporary American Cinema (Open University Press/McGraw-Hill, 2006), as well as articles on documentary film and media, radical politics, American film history, and cultural theory in Afterimage, Camera Obscura, Film Quarterly, Social Text, and Surfaces.


Jerónimo Rodríguez Naranjo (Film Critic) was born in Santiago, Chile. Jerónimo moved to the U.S. after graduating from law school. He works as host/critic on the film review television program, Take One, on NY1 in New York City, and contributes as a film columnist for various publications, like People Magazine and Capital Magazine.
