Documenta Spain 2006: Recent documentaries from Spain

INVIERNO EN BAGDAD (Winter in Bagdad) by Javier Corcuera, Spain, 2005, 78 min. In Arabic with English subtitles.

Winner of “Best Documentary” at the 2005 Los Angeles Film Festival, filmmaker Javier Corcuera brings his gift of storytelling to this beautifully crafted film, allowing the viewer to integrate the political with the personal in the tragedy of Iraq that has unfolded since the war began in spring 2003. “Winter in Baghdad” is as visually beautiful as it is emotionally deep—a rich tapestry of life in Baghdad today which counterbalances the simplistic and repetitive images of this once great city that are presented by the vast majority of the mainstream news media.

Winner of “Best Documentary” at the 2005 Los Angeles Film Festival.

With the support of the Consulate General of Spain in New York and the collaboration of the International Documentary Association (www.documentary.org)

With the support of the Consulate General of Spain in New York.

Film series: Gods Elect? Religion, Media and Elections in the Americas

FALL OF FUJIMORI, directed by Ellen Perry (2005, 83 min.)

In 1990, Albert Fujimori was elected president of Peru and successfully fought Peru’s guerilla organizations. In 2000, following accusations of kidnapping, murder and corruption, he fled to Japan. This film is an intimate, chilling portrait of his rise and fall, and his quest to return to politics in Peru.

Discussion with Diana Taylor (Director, Hemispheric Institute, NYU Performance Studies) and Deborah Poole (Department of Anthropology, Johns Hopkins University).

Sponsored by NYU’s Center for Religion and Media/Center for Media, Culture and History  and the King Juan Carlos I of Spain Center. Co-sponsored by NYU’s Department of Performance Studies
