Who was Jacobo Arbenz Guzman? What happened to the handsome, wildly popular reformer who was president of Guatemala until 1954?
Arbenz had led the successful 1944 revolt against Guatemala´s military dictatorship, a regime that had oppressed the country since colonialism. Arbenz, the son of Swiss immigrants, was celebrated as a national hero. In 1950, Arbenz was elected president. Arbenz did not belong to any party and he did not issue any manifestos, but he began to fulfill his promises – farmers got their own land. However, in the early 1950s, with the Cold War intensifying, Arbenz and his idealism quickly became impediments to the neocolonialist plans of Uncle Sam, the United Fruit Company, and the CIA. Something had to be done. Vice President Richard Nixon said “Arbenz is not a Guatemalan President” but rather “a foreigner, manipulated by foreign powers.” Arbenz was soon overthrown, declared a traitor and chased out of the country.
Devils Don't Dream! ranges from the stunning testimony of an aging CIA provocateur who brought down the dream, to a chilling political masquerade -- Nixon and Guzman's "puppet" replacement at a press conference, mouthing phony platitudes about the evils of the former president's communism.
