This paper studies technological change in Developing Country contexts. Notions of
technological dependence, transfers of technology, technological capability, and the spatial manifestation of these variables are discussed. Processes of technological advance are analyzed conceptually and theoretically, by questioning how firms acquire the capability to use technology more efficiently. Developing regional technological capabilities, it is argued, is a necessary condition for steady and continuing processes of technological change in peripheral areas, and arises through the technological efforts of people, firms, and regions.
